This tutorial will teach you how to attach text to a path. A path can be either a complicated B-spline curve, a simple object path, or text that has been converted to a path. We will use text on a path to add an a bit of flair to an imaginary advertising piece.

We are using a photograph as a background, so we began by creating our document and importing our image. *See our tutorial on how to import images.

There are two ways you can add text to a path. The first is to create the path and text separately, and combine them. The second way is to create the path and type the text directly onto it.

We will use the first method and combine separate path and text.

Step 1
First, we will type out our slogan using the Text tool (T).

Step 2
Next, create a path for the text to follow using the B-spline tool (W). We created a simple sine wave shape. Use the Node tool (N) to adjust the nodes to reshape the path as needed.

Step 3
Now we will attach our slogan text to the B-spline curve. Select both the text and the path.

Step 4
From the main menu, choose Objects > Text on Path > Attach Text.

Part of our text is outside the document border, so we need to do a little tweaking.

You can move the text along the path by selecting the text with the selection tool (S). A straight line appears at the beginning of the text object that you can click on and drag to move the text along the path. The cursor changes to the text tool icon with arrows.

Edit your text size to fit on the path if necessary.

*Note: Line breaks are ignored when you attach text to a path. All words/letters are lined up sequentially, so you may need to add spaces between some words.

We’re done!
